Chartres Cathedral
Chartres Cathedral is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the greatest examples of High Gothic architecture, located just an hour from Paris in the lovely town of Chartres.
What makes it truly special are its incredibly well-preserved stained-glass windows from the 12th and 13th centuries—more than 170 of them, filling the vast interior with that famous deep “Chartres blue” glow and telling stories from the Bible in brilliant colors.
Don’t miss the beautifully carved Royal Portals on the west facade, or the ancient labyrinth laid into the nave floor, which visitors can walk as a meditative pilgrimage path. If you can, plan your trip during the Chartres en Lumières festival, when amazing light projections turn the cathedral into a magical, illuminated spectacle at night.
It’s a place full of art, history, and quiet wonder that appeals to everyone from architecture fans to those just looking for inspiration.
